Colerain Township, originally named "Coleraine" was settled starting in 1790, It was given this name by the original surveyor of this land, John Dunlap. John thought the terrain and climate looked very much like his home town of Coleraine, Ireland.
Colerain Township has an interesting and significant history in this Southwest Ohio area, from its early pioneers at Dunlap's Station, to today's citizens. It is still today the largest township in the state of Ohio. Dunlap's Station was an early defense for the settlers in what was then the Northwest Territory area. Then as Colerain developed with towns like Bevis, Barnsburg, Groesbeck, and Dunlap, Colerain was the major route of commerce for farms and industry traveling to Cincinnati from the Northwest lands of Ohio, Indiana and later Illinois. From its early hotels, schools and churches to airports, manufacturing, and research, Colerain has been and is today an area important to the lives of everyone in Southwest Ohio.
